She sings lead vocal on all the songs and the album also features Sir Paul playing a variety of instruments and their son, James, on guitar.

The album includes all the songs she recorded privately over the past 20 years.

Geoff Baker, a spokesman for the McCartney family, said: "The album is completely diverse and includes everything from ballads to pop songs.

"It is one of the things that Linda wanted to do and I think she would have been very proud of it."

The album will be released worldwide at the end of October, or early November.

A short animated film also called Wide Prairie which features a song from the album was shown at the Edinburgh International Film Festival last month.

The six-minute long cartoon fantasy - about a child riding a prairie on horseback - was shown before the UK première of Robert Redford's The Horse Whisperer.
