Picasso collection goes on display

The Ludwig Museum has been closed for renovation
A Cologne museum has opened an exhibition of 526 works by Pablo Picasso, drawn from a collection assembled by one of the world's great art patrons.

The collection was built up by the late German industrialist Peter Ludwig and his wife, Irene, over half a century.

The Ludwig Museum's exhibition ranges across the Spanish artist's whole career, and includes the painting Woman with an Artichoke and the sculpture Head of a Woman (Dora Mar).

Peter Ludwig, who made his fortune in chocolate, died in 1996 after donating 90 Picasso works to the city of Cologne.

His widow recently offered a further 774 of the artist's works to the city.

Endowments

Many of the thousands of works collected by Ludwig and his wife have already been displayed in museums around the world.

Ludwig also set up several endowments and gave freely to museums.

Pablo Picasso was born in Spain in 1881 but spent most of his life in France. He died, in the southern French town of Mougins, in 1973.

The Ludwig Museum in the city is re-opening with the Picasso show, which runs through to 28 April, after a nine-month closure for renovation.
