'Winslet hideaway' complaint upheld
Kate Winslet
Winslet: Not her possessions in the photos
The Press Complaints Commission has upheld a complaint against Hello! for publishing "misleading" pictures of actress Kate Winslet's Cornish home.

The former owner of the house, Mrs Lesley Brain, complained to the PCC after Hello! published interior shots taken before the actress bought the property but without making this point clear.

Mrs Brain said the feature on 13 March, entitled "Kate Winslet's Cornish hideaway", was misleading because it implied she had sold treasured items, including a wedding gift, with the house.

In its adjudication the PCC stated: "The commission could understand the complainant's embarrassment and irritation at the misleading impression that had been created."

Phil Hall, editor of Hello!, denied the feature was misleading.

Sale

Hall said the photos had been taken by The Times with Mrs Brain's consent and that they had appeared elsewhere.

But Mrs Brain - who now lives in Faro, Portugal - argued that The Times had made clear that she was the owner of the items.

Mrs Brain added that, living abroad, she could not monitor every publication that included the pictures.

The photos were taken while Mrs Brain's house was on the market to publicise its sale.

The PCC agreed that, in the context of the Hello! feature, the pictures breached clause one of its code of practice which governs press accuracy.
