Fatboy Slim set for MTV triumph
Fatboy Slim
Fatboy Slim is up for nine awards
British star Fatboy Slim leads the charge to walk away with the lion's share of trophies at the MTV Video Awards in New York on Thursday.

Fatboy Slim - one of the world's most successful dance DJs - was nominated for nine prizes for his Weapon of Choice video.

The DJ - whose real name is Norman Cook - is followed by a raft of US acts with fewer nominations, including Eminem and 'N Sync.

But overall this could turn out to be a good year for homegrown British music talent at the awards, which honour the best music videos of the year.

Robbie Williams, Coldplay, Gorillaz and David Gray are the other British stars up for awards, making this the UK's most successful year for nominations to date.

Fatboy Slim's Weapon of Choice was only released as a single in America.

The video was made by Spike Jonze, the acclaimed US director of Oscar-nominated movie Being John Malkovich.

The video stars US actor Christopher Walken, star of Pulp Fiction and Sleepy Hollow.

Walken is seen putting on an unlikely performance as he dances acrobatically through an empty hotel.

Jonze has a sound reputation for directing acclaimed videos, including Fatboy Slim's Praise You and the Beastie Boys' Sabotage.

Janet Jackson
Janet Jackson is also up for best video

The most prestigious of the 20 MTV awards is Best Video of the Year.

In this category, Fatboy Slim is up against Eminem, for the video to Stan, Janet Jackson for All For You, Missy Elliot for Get Ur Freak On and U2 for Beautiful Day.

Elsewhere in the nominations, a number of pop acts are up for as many as six awards.

They include hit US boy group 'N Sync, Missy Elliott and the Lady Marmalade quartet - Christina Aguilera, Mya, Pink and Lil' Kim.

U2, Eminem and Destiny's Child are all named in five categories.

Whatever the outcome of the ceremony on Thursday night at New York's Metropolitan Opera House, it promises to be a memorable and spectacular show.

It will feature a farewell tribute to the late R&'B star Aaliyah - who died in a plane crash on 25 August.

After the tribute, the family of the singer will make its first major public statement about her death.

A number of the nominees are also down to perform at the awards. U2 will play live along with Jennifer Lopez, Missy Elliott and Britney Spears.

Spears, however, has come under fire from animal rights activists after it was disclosed she plans to use four live cheetahs on stage during her act.

American campaign group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) condemned the act and called on Spears to remove the animals from the show.

Stars lined up to present awards at the ceremony include Macy Gray and Planet of the Apes star Mark Wahlberg.

Last year, 'N Sync won three awards, while Eminem, Aaliyah, Bjork and Macy Gray took home two gongs each.
