Winslet's dream marriage that hit reality
Winslet and Threapleton
Winslet recently admitted: "At times it's tough"
Kate Winslet had seemed to have the type of marriage that Hollywood stars could only tell their therapists they dreamt about.

Jim Threapleton was a "rather glorious-looking blond boy with fantastic blue eyes" who Winslet, 25, talked about spending the rest of her life with, and the birth of their daughter, Mia, in October 2000, reinforced the perception.

They met in 1998 on the Moroccan set of Hideous Kinky, where Winslet was the star and Threapleton the third assistant director.

She has admitted thinking to herself "I'm marrying you, that's it!" after being struck by love at first sight during the shoot.

Later that year, her prediction came true. Winslet "wept a sea of tears" when the couple married in Reading, Berkshire, in November 1998.

It was a low-key event where friends and family - including actress Emma Thompson - ate sausage and mash at the Crooked Billet pub during the reception, showing Winslet's characteristic determination to keep her feet firmly on the ground.

In January 2000, news broke that Winslet was pregnant, and a daughter was born in October.

Named Mia, the Italian word for "mine", Winslet has spoken to the press about the joys and concerns of motherhood.

Her concerns have mainly been fears about not living up to the expectations of being a good mother, and not wanting to look like the back end of a bus.

The joys have been glowing comments about her new family in her disarmingly honest style.

Earlier this year, she still hoped to create a "magical, untouchable world" for her family.

"It's nice to be happy and not questioning anything in my life. And that's definitely been since I met Jim," she told a newspaper.

She has praised Threapleton for being so good with Mia - and said she wished she could be so good with the baby - but has recently admitted for the first time that there have been difficulties.

"There are highs and lows and at times it's tough," she told InStyle magazine.

Winslet met Threapleton several months before the death of her former boyfriend, EastEnders scriptwriter Stephen Tredre, from cancer.

But she has said the relationship with Threapleton was the only one she thought would last for the rest of her life.

Her hopes were raised when the success of Titanic catapulted her to the Hollywood A-list.

"Thank God he hung in there, most people couldn't have taken it," she later told a journalist.

Her role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio helped Titanic make twice as much money as any other film at world box offices, and was the launching pad for the next stage of her career.

She had previously won praise - but never massive success - in Heavenly Creatures, Jude and Sense and Sensibility, which earned her an Oscar nomination.

Since Titanic, she has starred in Quills and Holy Smoke, and is set to hit screens next as a World War II code breaker in Enigma.

Winslet had said that she wanted Threapleton - who also worked on The Mummy - to direct her.

But that, like the marriage, is now off.
