In pictures: Adieu to Aaliyah

Mourners have attended a private mass for the Grammy-nominated star Aaliyah, who died in a plane crash in the Bahamas on Saturday.

Boxer Mike Tyson, singer Gladys Knight and singer P Diddy were among mourners for the service at the Frank E Campbell Funeral Home.

Afterwards a horse-drawn hearse carried the singer's coffin to the St Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church in New York, where hundreds of fans gathered for the funeral.

The funeral mass was private, attended by some 100 family members and friends.

The Frank E Campbell Funeral Home also handled arrangements for John Lennon, Notorious B.I.G and Jacqueline Onassis

A book of condolence has been set up at the funeral home for fans and well-wishers to sign

A daylong memorial event for the public also was being held near Grand Central Station

Aaliyah's mother, Diane Houghton, led the mourners along with the singer's brother Rashad

Shatika Wallace of New Jersey held a poster of Aaliyah and cried as she waited for the funeral procession

White doves were released - one for each of the singer's 22 year-old years - outside St Ignatius Loyola Church in New York
