Cruise and Cruz go public

Actors Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz have made their much-discussed relationship public at the Los Angeles première of her latest film, Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

The couple, who have been dating since Cruise's 39th birthday and following the breakdown of his marriage to Nicole Kidman, posed for photographers at the Beverly Hills screening.

Cruise and Kidman divorced last week only hours after avoiding each other at a Hollywood première of The Others.

Reports of a romantic link between Tom Cruise and the Spanish actress were first rumoured during the filming of the forthcoming movie Vanilla Sky, in which they both appear.

But confirmation of the couple's relationship was given on the American show Entertainment Tonight when Cruise's publicist Pat Kingsley told the programme that they "had a few dates".

Nicole Kidman, who is currently trying to reach a private settlement with Cruise, is refusing to be bitter about the collapse of their marriage.

When asked about her opinion of Cruise's relationship with his Vanilla Sky co-star on the programme Good Morning America, Kidman refused to air her dirty laundry in public.

"I'm a woman, a mother, a daughter, a sister, I'm a real person operating in the world. For me to sit here in front of millions of people and discuss the most private thing feels wrong.

"It feels like I am betraying myself and my children," Kidman declared.

The divorced couple have until October to reach a private settlement, if they are to avoid a court battle.

Tom Cruise's fortune is reported to be in the region of $250m (£176m) and includes five houses, two aeroplanes and around $1m (£700,000) worth of jewellery.

The result of a court battle could prove costly for the actor, if it is proved the couple were together for 10 years as Californian law states the assets of the marriage must be divided equally.
