Avengers party falls flat

Sean Connery is the villain in the 1990s version of The Avengers

The British release of The Avengers, the latest of this summer's blockbusters, was celebrated with a lavish party at a top London nightspot on Monday night.

Although thousands of pounds were spent on the exclusive party, none of the major stars bothered to show up.

Lookalike takes centre stage

Ralph Fiennes, who plays the role of Steed, is currently busy filming his latest movie role.

Uma Thurman, who plays the character Emma Peel, was at home in America looking after her newborn baby.

Publicists obliged photographers by hiring an Uma Thurman lookalike especially for the party at London's trendy club The Leopard Lounge.

Former Madness frontman, Suggs, performed for the guests who did show up - they included Sian Lloyd, the TV weather girl and actor Jimmy Nail.

People's decision

The £50 million film has not been given a premiere or critics' screenings.

Warner Brothers, the producers have said they want the public to see it first, rather than the critics or the select few invited to private screenings.

The Avengers is a revival of the 1960s cult TV series of the same name.

In the big-screen version, the 1990s Steed and Mrs Peel attempt to quash a plot by Sir August De Wynter, played by Sean Connery, to upset the British weather.
