Cézanne painting fetches £26m
Cézanne
Second highest paid for a Cézanne painting
A painting by the renowned artist Paul Cézanne has sold at auction for a $38.5m (£26.8m).

The bid for La Montagne Sainte Victoire is the highest price paid for a landscape by the French painter.

It is also the second highest paid for his works at auction.

The sale of impressionist and modern art was held at the Phillips auction room in New York, with works from Van Gogh, Matisse and Cézanne.

Seven of the post-impressionist pictures had until recently been exhibited in a Berlin museum established by art dealer Heinz Berggruen.

His collection had been built up over 50 years.

Cézanne's works based on the motif of La Montagne Sainte-Victoire are widely regarded as some of his greatest achievements.

Peak period

The painting was completed between 1888 and 1890, during the peak of his impressionist period.

The highest ever paid for a Cézanne was $60.5m (£42.5m) for a still life in 1999.

The price paid by an anonymous bidder for Still Life With Curtain, Pitcher and Bowl of Fruit was the fourth highest ever paid for a painting.

The previous record for a Cézanne sold at auction was Les Grosses Pommes, which went for $28.6m (£17.8m) in 1993.

Three other Cézanne works were up for sale at the New York auction with Le Jardin des Lauves: vue sur Aix et la cathédrale de Saint-Sauveur, which fetched $2.4m (£1.7m); L'Allée à Chantilly, which took $9.3m (£6.6m) and Fillette à la Poupée, which took $16.5m (£11.5m).

Van Gogh's Arles, Vue des Champs de Blé sold for $4.4m (£3m) and Matisse's Nu Couché (Aurore) reached $10.4m (£7.2m).
