Aaron Sorkin, creator of the US drama series The West Wing, has been arrested for possession of drugs.

Mr Sorkin was arrested at Burbank Airport, California, on Sunday after his bags were searched by airport security.

"Illicit mushrooms" were allegedly found in his hand luggage, according to an airport spokesman.

The TV executive, who has admitted substance abuse problems in the past, was arrested and later released on bail.

"He was going through a screening checkpoint and personnel managing the checkpoint decided something was suspicious and needed further investigation," the spokesman said.

Medical assistance

He added that Mr Sorkin fainted briefly but declined medical assistance.

The TV executive has written a number of film and TV scripts, including the Tom Cruise movie A Few Good Men - orginally written as a play - and the Michael Douglas film, The American President.

He has also written the scripts for Bulworth, Malice, as well as co-operating on Enemy of the State.

He was also invited by Steven Spielberg to "polish" the script of Schindler's List.

"I am glad to be surrounded by such a supportive group of people and am prepared to proceed as directed by my attorney and in the best interest of my family," he said in a statement released on Monday.

The West Wing, starring Martin Sheen and Rob Lowe, is set in the White House and revolves around the working of the American president and the lives and loves of his support staff.

Last year the series won a record-breaking nine Emmy awards.
