Mystery over Evans 'engagement'
Broadcaster Chris Evans is to marry pop star girlfriend Billie Piper, according to a national newspaper report.

The Mirror claims the 18-year-old singer proposed to Evans on 1 April, the DJ's 35th birthday, in Paris.

But a spokeswoman for the former Virgin Radio boss told BBC News Online she was unaware of any marriage plans, as he was on holiday in Portugal.

"I don't know anything about it one way or the other," she said.


Stereophonics' midnight session

Welsh rock trio Stereophonics launched their new album with a midnight signing session at a London record store.

The group appeared at the HMV store at Oxford Circus shortly after midnight on Monday to plug Just Enough Education To Perform, which has just gone on sale.

Earlier, the band performed a gig for just 400 fans at the Scala venue, King's Cross, for a live broadcast on BBC Radio 1.

Around 500 fans queued in the rain outside the record shop to see bass player Richard ones, drummer Stuart Cable and vocalist Kelly Jones.


Hear'Say disown Darius

Pop group Hear'Say have made a cheeky attack on Darius Danesh, who was famously rejected by the Popstars TV show which created them.

The group were appearing on Dundee-based Radio Tay when DJ Paul Harper asked if the show was "edited to make him look an arse".

"No, he was really like that," replied singers Kym Marsh and Suzanne Shaw, as the rest of the group cheered.

Marsh added: "I think he tried a little too hard. I think he was the right talent at the wrong audition."

Danesh, 20, claims he will have a platinum-selling album by the time he is 35.


Zellweger's acting doubts

Actress Renee Zellweger doubted she would make it as an actress until just a few months ago, the Bridget Jones's Diary star has revealed.

She told Newsweek magazine that even after a string of movies including Jerry Maguire, and Me, Myself & Irene, she lacked confidence in her acting ability.

Zellweger said she wasn't sure she was going to be able to make a living as an actress until she won a Golden Globe in January for her role as a deluded soap opera fan in Nurse Betty.

"It was a very profound moment," she said.

"It made me realise that I had a reason to be there that night, that I wasn't crashing the party and about to be found out and shown the door."


Zeta Jones's TV return

Actress Catherine Zeta Jones is to return to the small screen in a new British mini-series called Trust.

Variety magazine describes it as a steamy thriller in which she plays a high-powered lawyer who must defend her husband when he is accused of murder.

The lawyer then discovers that her husband is having an affair.

The series will be set in London, says Variety.


Director Denzel gets film go-ahead

Hollywood star Denzel Washington has been given the green light for his directing debut.

The film, as yet untitled, is an autobiographical tale by an aspiring screenwriter who once worked as a security guard at a film studio.

Washington himself has expressed interest in playing the role of a psychiatrist in the film.

He has been trying to get the project off the ground since 1998.


BBC show for Big Brother's Anna

Big Brother star Anna Nolan is teaming up with presenter Davina McCall to host Closure - a new show for BBC One.

The duo will be helping members of the public to seek "closure" - righting wrongs, putting an end to pent-up emotions and laying problems to rest.

Each week there will be a performance from a top pop act.


Starry end for Third Rock

Popular American sitcom Third Rock from the Sun is coming to an end in the US this month.

The show, about a group of aliens who live on Earth in disguise is set for a star-studded finale.

John Cleese is to appear in the award-winning show, and Elvis Costello will serenade them into space with a rendition of Fly Me to the Moon.
