Millionaire makes online debut

The online quiz proved successful in US and Germany
ITV's hit quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? is making its internet debut on Monday.

An online version of the game is launching on ITV's website, which enables players to pit their wits against previous winners of the TV version of the show, hosted by Chris Tarrant.

Players will start with a stack of 15 questions and three life lines standing in between them and a virtual 1 million jackpot.

If they progress beyond the question which eliminated the TV contestant, then they can continue with the quiz and see if they would have made it to the big prize.

Profiles of past contestants will also feature on the site.

Versions of the online game have already proved successful in the US and Germany.

Hot seat

Millionaire? host Chris Tarrant said: "I think it's fantastic that people will be able to play Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and play whenever they want.

"I'm sure millions of people sit at home shouting out the answers. Now they can put their money where their mouth is and see how they would get on if they were in the hot seat."

The internet game is the first step in ITV's plans to develop interactive versions of Millionaire, which began in 1998 and is now seen across the world.

A format is being developed for digital channel ITV2 which will allow TV viewers to play along with studio contestants.
