Narrow escape: Rowan Atkinson with wife Sunetra

Rowan Atkinson, best known as TV's error-prone Mr Bean, has reportedly been involved in a dramatic mid-air rescue.

When his pilot passed out at the controls of his private plane he is said to have taken control of the Cessna 202 aircraft - saving the lives of his wife and two children.

But the star, who also played Blackadder in the BBC comedy, is remaining tight lipped about his heroics, reported on The Spectator magazine's website.

Atkinson is believed to have been on a family holiday in Kenya when the drama unfolded.

The family were about 45 minutes into their journey from Ukundu airstrip to Nairobi's Wilson Airport when the pilot of the private plane collapsed at the controls, the website claimed.

Atkinson, 46, and his wife Sunetra, travelling with their two children, Ben, eight, and Lilly, six, tried to revive the man, but Atkinson was forced to take over the controls despite never having piloted a plane.

But the pilot eventually came to, after several slaps by Atkinson, and managed to land the plane safely at the airport, it said.

After reporting the incident to the authorities, the Atkinsons took a scheduled flight back to the UK.

In 1999 Atkinson had another lucky escape, when he walked away unscathed after crashing his sports car.
