Westlife enjoy an eighth number one
Westlife have given Comic Relief a huge boost with their charity single Uptown Girl going straight in at number one in the charts.

The song, a cover of Billy Joel's original, is the band's eighth number one and is their biggest first-week seller to date.

We are very excited at the amazing first week that Uptown Girl has had

It shifted 292,318 copies and knocked Shaggy's single off the top spot.

A spokesman for the band said: "Comic Relief is a brilliant organisation that raises millions of pounds to help people both at home and abroad.

"Every single penny that is raised goes directly to these projects. The band are proud to be a small part of such a worthwhile cause."

'Grateful'

He added: "They are really grateful to everyone that has donated their time and money to make this record a huge success. And especially to all our fans for supporting Comic Relief."

Kevin Cahill, chief executive of Comic Relief, said: "We are very excited at the amazing first week that Uptown Girl has had. We can't thank Westlife enough for their support.

Popstars stand in the way of Westlife's continued chart domination
"We hope all those that haven't yet bought the single will do so this week keeping it at number one to raise even more money for Comic Relief."

The single will have a struggle to hold on to the top spot, despite the pleas from Comic Relief.

Hear'Say, the ITV Popstars band, release their first single, Pure and Simple, on Monday and it has reportedly amassed advance orders of 400,000 copies.
