Bets on for Popstars hit
Nigel Lythgoe
Nasty moments: Nigel Lythoe (right) is a cult figure
Bookmakers are giving odds of 2-1 on ITV's hit show Popstars spawning a number one single.

The programme follows potential pop stars as they try to catch the eye of judges who are attempting to put together a successful group.

The series has already made celebrities out of some of its participants, and a cult figure out of judge Nigel Lythgoe, who away from the cameras is controller of entertainment at LWT.

Ladbrokes spokesman Andy Clifton said: "Despite the fact that even the line-up has yet to be revealed and they haven't recorded a note, we believe they've got an excellent chance of the first single being a hit."

The winners of an Australian version on Popstars went straight to number one with their first single and album.

"If the release is timed right they won't have to sell that many records for it to be a big hit," said Mr Clifton.

The company is also quoting 10-1 for the group to take the Christmas number one slot.

Gennaro Castaldo, chart analyst for retailer HMV, said the chances were "very good".

"Judging by the amount of media interest already we can expect a great deal of hype which is a key ingredient in achieving any number one record," he said.

"The record company will choose the right time and will ensure massive promotion."

The first single from the group is expected to be released before the series ends.

Already, one contestant, Claire Freeland, has been given time in a London recording studio after being rejected from the group's line-up.
