Club date for U2
U2
The group last played London in 1997
Irish rock giants U2 are to play their most intimate British date in nearly two decades next month.

The four-piece will appear at the Astoria in central London on 7 February as a warm-up for a world tour which kicks off the following month.

The show will be free, with tickets given away on the band's website.

For the past two decades the group have been associated with stadium shows, and their last small gig in the UK was at the Hammersmith Palais in west London in 1983.

U2 last played in London in 1997, during the Popmart tour, in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.

Last year the band returned to the charts with a number one single Beautiful Day, and an album, All That You Can't Leave Behind.

The Astoria show follows similar low-key club dates by U2 in Paris and New York last year. They will be supported by DJ Jon Carter.

The venue, in Charing Cross Road, can hold 2,000 people and is best known for playing host to hard rock concerts and gay clubs.

Last year Madonna played a similar concert at the Brixton Academy in south London, which can hold 4,200 people.
