Britney Spears grew up listening to Madonna's records

Pop star Britney Spears has said she is planning to sing a duet with Madonna.

The teen idol said she grew up listening to Madonna's music and that the two singers are working out the best time to go into the recording studio.

She made the announcement before she went on stage at the Rock in Rio festival in Brazil, in front of 200,000 fans.

Some of the crowd reportedly booed the singer when an American flag was displayed on a video screen as she sang.

A spokesman for Virgin, her record distributors in Brazil, said the 19-year-old had told local press: "The duet with Madonna is going to happen.

'Collaboration'

"Madonna is great. I grew up listening to her in my room... I was really happy when she said she admired me.''

Last November Madonna, 42, was seen sporting a T-shirt emblazoned with Britney Spears' name on the front, sparking a fashion trend.

"Since we're both busy, we have to work out the best schedule to meet at the studio,'' the teenager added.

Madonna has not commented on the proposed duet.

A London-based spokeswoman for Jive Records, the singer's record label, told BBC News Online: "Both management companies have been in discussion over a collaboration."

Britney Spears performed at the specially-built City of Rock in Rio de Janeiro in Thursday, along with N' Sync and Five.
