Williams and Dench were married for 30 years

Actor Michael Williams has been remembered by friends and locals at a funeral service in a Surrey village.

The 65-year-old husband of Dame Judi Dench died last week after fighting cancer for several months.

More than 300 people filled the private ceremony at St John the Baptist Church in Outwood.

Among those present were Sir John Mills, National Theatre artistic director Trevor Nunn and actor-comedian Russ Abbott.

A mourner told the Press Association news agency: "The service was mainly attended by the local villagers - it really was the most touching service, extremely moving.

"It was a very private affair with just grew. I was very privileged to be there and I can think of hundreds of people who should have been there instead of me."

As well as gaining fame through his TV work, including A Fine Romance and September Song, Williams was also highly respected for his performances as a classical actor.

Dame Judi has not made a public comment, but the couple's 28-year-old daughter, Finty, e-mailed BBC News Online to thank users who had posted messages of condolence.

"We are so touched and honoured," she said.

"My Dad's last present to my mother was this laptop - what a good thing he did. Without it we may never have realised in what great regard he was held, not only in this country but around the world.
