Noel denies adultery claim
Meg Mathews and Noel Gallagher

Oasis star Noel Gallagher has denied ever being unfaithful to his wife during their three-year marriage.

In a statement released by the guitarist on the eve of his divorce from Meg Mathews, he said he had left because he could "no longer tolerate her behaviour".

He was responding to a newspaper report on Thursday which said he had admitted he was unfaithful.

The couple's marriage is due to end on Friday when their divorce is finalised in the High Court.

They married in Las Vegas in 1997 but separated in September last year, eight months after Mathews had given birth to their daughter Anais.

Quick divorce

The divorce petition quotes "irreconcilable breakdown arising from admitted adultery", but Gallagher said he had only admitted to adultery to obtain a quick divorce.

The guitarist and songwriter was linked to publicist Sara MacDonald in the course of the break-up and she is now his girlfriend.

He said: "Throughout our time together I never cheated on Meg.

"I have agreed to go along with Meg's request for a quick divorce for the sake of our family and in order to get the whole thing over with."

"I left Meg because I could no longer tolerate her behaviour," he said in the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aries, where Oasis are on tour.

In a separate statement, MacDonald also denied she had had an affair with the guitarist while he was still married to Meg Mathews.

"I feel that Ms Mathews would benefit from a more honest and introspective evaluation of the real causes of the breakdown of her marriage," she said.

The guitarist's brother Liam Gallagher also split from his wife, Patsy Kensit, last year.

The couple divorced in September.

Nicole Appleton, of All Saints, is now seeing the Oasis singer and the couple are expecting a child together.

Mathews, who is currently on holiday in the Far East, denied leaking details of the couple's divorce arrangements.

Her spokeswoman said: "Meg has never discussed and is not willing to discuss the current situation of her private life with the press."
