The BBC has denied reports that Dale Winton has demanded almost 100,000 to host a BBC quiz linked to Comic Relief.

He will present five episodes of the quiz 1,000 to 1 on consecutive Saturdays, with a live final being held on Comic Relief night on 16 March.

Comic Relief do not expect any artists working on prime time shows over a long period of time to be out of pocket

But a spokeswoman for the BBC said reports he was demanding 90,000 for the quiz show, when other celebrities often waive their fees for Comic Relief, were untrue.

"This is a peak-time quiz show over five weeks and Dale has been offered a fee to present it," she said.

She added: "He has agreed to discount his fee as part of his appearance on Comic Relief.

"Comic Relief do not expect any artists working on prime time shows over a long period of time to be out of pocket."

The quiz show, a variation on last year's 2,000 to 1, will see 1,000 people competing for prizes donated by sponsors of Comic Relief.

The programme will be used to raise awareness of Comic Relief night and the work of the charity in the build up to 16 March.

Comic Relief raised more than 27m last year, and has collected a total of 139m since its launch in 1985.

Two thirds of the money raised by Comic Relief goes to charitable projects in Africa, while the remainder goes to British charities.
