Westlife revival threatens Beatles
Westlife
Westlife's debut storms back to the charts
The Beatles' dominance of the UK album charts is under threat from a two-year-old album by boy band Westlife.

The Fab Four's greatest hits album, 1, has sat at the top of the charts since it was released in October.

But the Irish group's eponymous debut has outsold it so far this week - after being sold at a discount by one national chain.

Woolworths have been selling the album - first released in November 1999 - as a "mid-price" record, helping the five-piece leap back up the chart, edging just ahead of the Beatles.

Chart analyst Gennaro Castaldo told BBC News Online: "At this time of year, when sales are low, it doesn't take too much for something unusual to happen in the charts."

A spokeswoman for Westlife's record company, BMG, said that Woolworths had decided by itself to sell the album at a cheaper rate, but declined to comment any further on the record's revival.

However, the group, who already have their current album Coast To Coast in the top ten, will have to wait until Sunday to find out if they have toppled the Beatles, when the full chart is published.
