Musicians from the British Isles also feature highly, with Irish band U2 on three nominations, along with British producer Nigel Godrich, credited for his work with Radiohead and Travis.

Radiohead's Kid A album is up against Beck's Midnite Vultures, Paul Simon's You're The One, Steely Dan's Two Against Nature and Eminem in the album of the year category.

Madonna is nominated for record of the year for her single Music, along with U2's Beautiful Day, Destiny's Child's Say My Name, 'N Sync's Bye Bye Bye, and Macy Gray's I Try.

Eminem's success in the nominations comes after an eventful year for him.

The performer, whose real name is Marshall Mathers III, picked up three nominations for The Marshall Mathers LP, including album of the year, best rap album, and best rap solo performance.

He was also nominated for best rap performance and best rap performance by a duo or group for the track Forget About Dre on Dr Dre's album Dr Dre - 2001.

The Marshall Mathers LP was a massive hit around the world, despite critics accusing him of sexism in his lyrics.

His track Stan was the sixth biggest selling single in the UK last year.

He also briefly separated from his wife Kim during the same period.

His first album, The Slim Shady LP, was produced by Dr Dre, considred to be one of the pioneers of hip-hop.

A founding member of rap act NWA, their 1988 debut album Straight Outta Compton caused such controversy the group were investigated by the FBI.

While many of his peers, such as The Notorious BIG and Tupac Shakur, met violent ends, Dre's career has survived legal troubles, and 2001 is his second solo album.

Destiny's Child's nominations crown a successful 12 months for the soul act - but the four nominated members are unlikely to be sharing a table at the ceremony.

Singers LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett left the group in March 2000, protesting at the way Beyonce Knowles' father Matthew managed the group.

They were replaced by Farrah Franklin and Michelle Williams, although Franklin quit during the summer and the group now perform as a three-piece.
