Quills named film of the year

Geoffrey Rush and Kate Winslet star in Quills
Julia Roberts, Billy Elliot star Jamie Bell and the film Quills are given awards by the US National Board of Review, in the run-up to the Oscars.

The awards are considered the unofficial start of the US awards season, which culminate with the Oscars in March next year.

Quills follows the story of the controversial French writer, the Marquis de Sade, and was directed by Philip Kauffman.

The best actress award was won by Julia Roberts for her performance as the real-life legal crusader Erin Brockovich.

And British film Billy Elliot was among the nine other films praised for excellence by the board, which included Gladiator, Traffic, Croupier and Wonder Boys.

Jamie Bell, who starred in Billy Elliot as the miner's son desperate to be a ballet dancer, was named outstanding young actor.

Javier Bardem was named based actor for Before Night Falls, a film based on the memoirs of Cuban novelist and poet Reinaldo Arenas.

The best supporting actor award went to Joaquin Phoenix for his performances in Gladiator, Quills and The Yards.

And Lupe Ontiveros won the award for best supporting actress for her role in Chuck and Buck.

Erin Brockovich also gained further glory when its director Steven Soderbergh, who also directed Traffic, was named best director.

The best foreign film went to Oscar favourite Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, directed by Ang Lee, who also directed Oscar-winning Sense and Sensibility.

Ridley Scott's Gladiator won an award for best product/art design while singer Bjork was honoured for best dramatic musical performance by an actress.

The NBR will present the prizes to the stars in January in New York.

The awards season continues next week when the winners of the Directors Guild of America and the prestigious New York Film Critics Circle are announced.
