Muppets creator honoured with statue
Jim Henson
Jim Henson and his famous creations
The creator of the Muppets, the late Jim Henson, is to be honoured with a statue at his old university.

The life-size statue will be erected at the University of Maryland.

Henson, who died in 1990, began his puppeteering career in 1954 while at the university.

He developed his own TV programme, Sam and Friends, on a local NBC-affiliated channel.

The twice-daily, five-minute show also marked the debut of Kermit the Frog, Henson's most famous creation.

Kermit

The bronze likeness of Henson and Kermit the Frog, is to be placed at the Adele Stamp Student Union in 2002.

The sculpture is a gift from Maryland's class of 1998.

The school's class of 1999 will pay for landscaping around the sculpture.

"Jim loved attending the university, and it was clearly an important beginning for his extraordinary career,'' said Jane Henson, the artist's wife.

Henson's big break came when he was asked to produce puppets for the children's television programme Sesame Street.

Henson created children's favourite's Ernie and Bert, Oscar the Grouch, Grover, Cookie Monster, and the eight-foot, two-inch Big Bird.

The Muppet Show began in 1975 with the backing of British television mogul Lord Lew Grade, who owned the now-defunct ITV company ATV.

Henson's company, Jim Henson's Creature Shop, continues to produce puppets and animatronic creatures for films and television.
