Scotland
Scotland's education system stands apart from that in the rest of the UK by having a different set of examinations, based on a much less centralised curriculum.
Pre-school
Nursery education is for children aged two to five and takes place in nursery schools or nursery classes in primary schools.
Primary
Primary education begins at five years in Great Britain.
Secondary
Comprehensive schools are the main type of secondary school in Scotland, attended by 96 per cent of pupils aged 12 to 18.
Special needs
Special education is provided for children with special needs, usually because they have a disability which either prevents or hinders them from making use of the educational facilities generally provided for children of their age.
Curriculum
The content and management of the curriculum in Scotland are not prescribed by statute but are the responsibility of education authorities and individual headteachers.
Management and funding
Public sector education in Scotland is a partnership between central and local government.
Independent
Independent schools provide education, at a price, from the age of three to 18.
Staying on
In the fifth and sixth years of secondary education, pupils who have chosen to remain at school after the end of compulsory education study for the Higher Grade Scottish Certificate of Education.
Higher education
Higher education is that above Advanced Higher grade and its equivalents and is provided in universities and colleges of higher education and in some further education colleges.
Postgraduate
Postgraduate programmes of study are those leading to higher degrees, diplomas and certificates.
Parents' rights
In the UK, parents have a statutory right to express a preference for a particular school for their child, and there is an appeal system if their choice is not met.
