The American film director Woody Allen has married Soon Yi, the adopted daughter of his former lover, Mia Farrow, in Venice. The Mayor of Venice, Massimo Cacciari, confirmed that he carried out the civil ceremony on Tuesday evening. Here's a report from our Rome correspondent, David Willey:
Woody Allen and Soon Yi were married at the city hall by Venice's Mayor, Massimo Cacciari. Only the witnesses and close friends were present.
The couple had asked the city authorities to keep the ceremony secret, but a New York newspaper scooped the wedding and the Mayor later confirmed that the wedding had taken place as reported.
The couple have been in Italy to attend the opening of the Milan opera season.
Woody Allen who is 62 years old, has been married twice before. Soon Yi, aged 27, is the adopted daughter of the actress Mia Farrow, for many years Woody Allen's lover, and the conductor Andre Previn.
The relationship between Woody Allen and Soon Yi first became known six years ago and it caused a scandal at the time.
Mia Farrow had been dating Allen for more than a decade and had starred in many of his films.
She and Andre Previn adopted Soon Yi when she was only eight years old during a visit to South Korea. Woody Allen's agents said the couple had close attachments to Venice.
Woody Allen held a charity showing in Venice of his recent film "Everyone says I Love You" to help raise funds for the rebuilding of the Fenice opera house which was destroyed by fire.
