(Close): US were higher on Tuesday with strong earnings figures and news of mergers providing support.

Adobe Systems jumped 6% to $30.93 after it gave a positive forecast on future earnings.

Coal miner Massey Energy rose 1.2% on hopes the company was looking for potential buyers.

The leading Dow Jones index managed a gain of 0,48% to end Tuesday at 11,533.16 points while the S&P index reached another two-year high.
