Lastminute voted 'worst' travel site
Lastminute.com co-founders MArtha Lane Fox and Brent Hoberman
Lastminute has still to win customer support
Internet retailer Lastminute.com is the "worst" UK travel site, according to a readers poll in a UK newspaper.

The online retailer has garnered more publicity than many of its competitors, thanks in part to the promotional efforts of co-founders Brent Hoberman and Martha Lane Fox.

But it was the lower profile expedia.co.uk that was voted the best travel website.

The poll was based on responses by 6,000 Daily Telegraph readers and were analysed by NOP, an independent market research company.

Half of all readers polled said they had booked at least part of a holiday on the internet.

Distant profits

Like many online retailers, Lastminute.com has yet to post a profit.

Lastminute.com saw its losses narrow in the third quarter as analysts estimated that it will not reach profitability until 2003.

Its user base is broadening, but on the basis of the Telegraph survey, it is unclear how many of these are satisfied customers.

At the end of the third quarter, the number of registered users it had across Europe exceeded two million. About 30% of these were outside the UK.

Lastminute.com held its initial public offering in March and saw its shares soar on the day of its flotation, just before market sentiment toward technology stocks changed. Its shares have since fallen.
