The travel chaos caused by volcanic ash over Europe for much of last week could cost EU airlines up to 2.5bn euros (£2.2bn), the European Transport Commissioner has said.

Siim Kallas said there could be a case for state aid to help the aviation industry recover from the crisis, which he described as "exceptional".

He added that no airline should gain a competitive advantage by ignoring customers' rights to a refund or care.

Richard Scott reports.
