Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesman Vince Cable has said it is time banks were broken up to separate their investment arm from their retail business, after Barclays reported record annual profits of £11.6bn.

The figure is an increase of 92% for Barclays, which did not take any government help during the financial crisis.

However Mr Cable said there was still a question about where the profits would go.
