Toyota to recall thousands of UK cars

Toyota has said it will need to recall nearly 200,000 cars in the UK because of fears over what they call a sticky accelerator.

The seven models being recalled are the Aygo, iQ, Yaris, Auris, Corolla, Verso, and Avensis and cover manufacturing dates going back to February 2005.

The company said it was not aware of any accidents resulting from the issue in the UK, and only a limited number of cases involving accelerator pedals had been reported in Europe.

Last month, an off-duty California state trooper and three members of his family were killed when their 2009 Lexus E350 crashed in the San Diego area.

Before the crash, one of the passengers called 911 to report that the accelerator was stuck and the car had reached 120 miles per hour (193km per hour).

Lucy Sheppard reports.
