Tesco says the new scheme could cut household waste
Tesco has launched the first of its proposed "Buy One, Get One Free Later" schemes which it hopes will help reduce household waste.
The deal is initially being trialled for a two week period and applies on purchases of pineapple, melon, salad and lettuce.
Customers buying one of the featured products on special offer will be given a voucher at the check-out till.
They can then use this voucher for the same purchases the following week.
The decision to offer the new deals follows Sainsbury's launch of their "Buy Now, Free Next Time" offer last November.
Sainsbury's deal, available on nappies and white crusty bread, was well received and was launched to allow customers flexibility to stretch their household budgets further.
Tesco says the "Buy One, Get One Free Later" is part of a wider goal to turn it into a zero carbon business by 2050 and increase low carbon choices for customers, reducing the amount of household waste.
The firm said the offer meant that smaller households would not be forced to throw out "buy one, get one free" items before their use-by date.
"Feedback shows smaller households sometimes can't use the free product before its use-by date," said Lucy Neville-Rolfe, Tesco executive director.
She said the new arrangement gave customers the flexibility to claim their free product the following week instead.
The trials begin this week and after reviewing customers feedback, Tesco will then decide how to expand on the range of offers for the future.
