Technology firms boost US economy

There are fresh signs that the technology sector could be helping to drive America's recovery onto a firmer footing.

Two of the biggest tech names, Oracle and Blackberry phone-maker Research in Motion - have unveiled bumper quarterly earnings.

That went down well on Wall Street, where shares in both companies jumped on the news. The hope is now that companies which have been laying off workers and slashing budgets may look to new IT to boost their productivity as the US economy picks up speed.
