'EU must support Russia over Ukraine'

Russian energy giant Gazprom has criticised the European Union for not doing enough to head off another gas crisis this winter.

Most Russian gas is pumped via pipelines in Ukraine to the rest of Europe. But, several rows between Russia and Ukraine over unpaid bills, price hikes and theft have resulted in rolling supply cuts to several European countries.

So far this year, Ukraine has paid its supply bills. But the country has a shortage of foreign currency and is already dependent on emergency loans from the International Monetary Fund.

Gazprom's Deputy Chief Executive Alexander Medvedev told the BBC's Sharanjit Leyl that his company would waive billions of dollars of transit fees but, in return, the EU had to get tough on its neighbour.
