G20 ministers gather in Scotland

St Andrews is preparing to welcome world finance ministers

Finance ministers from the world's 20 leading economies are due to gather for talks in St Andrews.

The G20 summit, which will last until Saturday, is the latest in a series that led to a $1tn (£600bn) fiscal stimulus to tackle the recession.

On the agenda will be the issue of economic recovery as well as creating a review process to close budget, consumption and trade gaps.

Demonstrations have been organised to coincide with the weekend gathering.

A low key rally by has been held by around 20 environmental protestors who gathered with a handful of placards.

The main demonstration is expected tomorrow when a coalition of anti-war campaigners and student groups plan to stage a protest in the Fife town to "say nae tae the G20".

Additionally, a "people's G20" will be held at the beach on Saturday prior to talks and "cultural events".

Ahead of the meeting, UK Chancellor Alistair Darling urged finance ministers to "get on" with the task of tackling climate change.

The Group of 20, or G20, is composed of the world's most powerful countries.
