UK unemployment at 14 year high

Unemployment is at its highest level for 14 years. It increased by 210,000 to 2.47m in the three months to July, taking the jobless rate to 7.9%.

The narrower claimant count - people claiming Jobseekers Allowance - is around 1.6m - is up but the rate of increase has slowed in recent months.

For some who lose their jobs, financial hardship looms much more quickly than they had expected, as Hugh Pym reports.
