Record sales of mobiles boost LG

LG's touch-screen Arena phone
LG sold a record 29.8 million mobile phone handsets in the quarter

South Korean electronics firm LG Electronics has increased profits thanks to record mobile phone sales and strong results from its TV business.

LG, the world's number three mobile phone maker, sold a record 29.8 million handsets in the three months to July.

It was boosted by premium products such as multimedia touch-screen phone Arena, and steady sales of mid-range phones.

LG Electronics earned 1.15 trillion won ($903m; £550m) in the quarter, against 707bn won a year ago.

Price competitiveness from a weaker won also helped LG expand its market share in mobile phones, despite the global economic downturn.

LG also saw strong sales of flat-screen TVs and improved earnings at its liquid crystal display division.
