Nationwide online problem fixed

Nationwide online banking site
Nationwide said the problem started after routine maintenance

A technical glitch that left customers of the UK's biggest building society unable to access their online accounts has been fixed.

Nationwide said the problem hit the system for most of Sunday, following routine maintenance.

Earlier in the day there was sporadic access to the system, before the site went down completely.

A Nationwide spokesman said: "We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to customers."

The firm called in extra staff to try to deal with the problem which started after work to the site finished at 0300 BST on Sunday.

More than one million of Nationwide's 15m members use its online banking service.
