Political leaders and businesses across the world are anxious to soften the impact of the economic slowdown.

A number of European countries have come up with large-scale stimulus packages, hoping to revive the ailing economy.

But apart from government initiatives, can the recession be tackled at grassroots level?

The BBC is looking for stories of small-scale, local initiatives in Europe that are giving fresh hope to people.
