Picking decent wine for tough times


The UK has become the world's biggest importer of wine, according to figures released in January 2009.

But despite the increasing quantities of wine flowing into the UK, the industry has not escaped the effects of the economic downturn.

Wine sales in the UK dropped by more than 3.5% in 2008 and the drop is predicted to continue as the recession takes hold.

But are there still ways to get decent wine in credit-crunched times?

Wine expert Olly Smith looks at some of the good value-for-money regions and bottles which could see you through the gloom, while industry experts and buyers explain how the credit crunch is changing their buying and selling habits.
