Shares in The Real Hotel Company were suspended last week

The Real Hotel Company, which operates dozens of hotels in the UK and Europe, has appointed administrators after running into financial difficulties.

The company runs hotels under its own brands, Purple Hotels and Stop Inns, and under brands licensed from Choice Hotels International.

It also runs the New Connaught Rooms conferencing venue in London.

The company joins a long and growing list of businesses that have fallen foul of the economic downturn.

"It is with deep regret that the board has appointed administrators, Shay Bannon and Antony Nygate of BDO Stoy Hayward, with immediate effect in respect of its trading subsidiary, The Real Hotel Company," a statement issued by the company's owner The Real Hotel Group said.

The group announced the suspension of the company's shares on 13 January.
