Marks and Spencer chief Stuart Rose has defended the chain after its UK sales fell by 7.1% in the run-up to Christmas.
His comments came as the firm announced it planned to close 25 of its small Simply Food stores and another two of its normal stores.
Mr Rose told the BBC more than 50m people had been into a Marks and Spencer store in the week before Christmas, and that it still offered good value and "a treat" for customers.
