First-time buyer Tom Newman, from Benfleet in Essex, is desperate to buy, but thanks to the credit crunch is finding it impossible.

Since the 27-year-old left university, he has lived for the most part with his parents, allowing him to save a deposit. Although he could afford a one-bed flat, he wants to buy a two-bed house.

Despite a £35,000 deposit he has been unable to find a mortgage.
