Sainsbury's suffers another glitch at its home delivery website

Supermarket giant Sainsbury's has had to suspend its online grocery service for much of the day because of a glitch at its internet service provider.

The grocer's site, which is now back online, was closed after problems at Cable & Wireless (C&W) which provides internet services to the retailer.

C&W provides web hosting services to a number of big UK companies.

It said a number of clients were hit by problems at one of its sites after equipment was stolen.

It is the second time Sainsbury's has experienced technical problems with its home delivery site.

In June, its online store was out of action for two days.

Shop-lifting

"The issues have arisen following a break-in at one of our network sites in Watford, in which some of our equipment was stolen," said a C&W spokesman.

"This has interrupted services to customers for whom we provide managed hosting services."

The internet service provider said it is investigating the incident.

Last month, an internet outage at Sainsbury's put its online ordering system out of operation for two days affecting more than 10,000 online shoppers.

Sainsbury's offered customers £10 vouchers as compensation.
