Mars bar loses its veggie status

Mars now contains whey that may contain animal rennet
The Vegetarian Society has condemned Masterfoods for putting animal-based products in its chocolate bars such as Mars, Snickers, Bounty and Twix.

Masterfoods wrote to the society saying it could no longer guarantee that its products do not contain animal rennet.

"Many will be shocked to discover that their manufacture now relies on the extraction of rennet from the stomach lining of calves," the society said.

Products with a best before date up to 1 October are suitable for vegetarians.

The Vegetarian Society has encouraged its members to contact Masterfoods to express concern at the decision.
