Ribena is to launch a new blueberry version this summer, responding to surging consumer demand for the so-called super-fruit.

The soft drink's maker GlaxoSmithKline said women between 18 and 30 would be a key market for the new version.

Sales of blueberries have surged over the last year after claims the fruit could help protect the body from a range of illnesses.

Ribena is traditionally made with blackcurrants, using 95% of UK crops.

Customer loyalty

The Blackcurrant Foundation, which represents UK growers, said they would be unaffected by the new blueberry version.

Yet at the same time it said it was going to hit back with a campaign to promote the benefits of their "forgotten fruit", saying their berries contained more anti-oxidant health protecting properties.

A GlaxoSmithKline spokesman said the new blueberry squash and ready-to-drink varieties of Blueberry Ribena would hit the shops in the summer.

"Ribena is a British brand with a long heritage and exceptional consumer loyalty," he said.

"It has been loved by young and old alike for generations and we are confident that the plans we have for the brand's future will ensure it continues to grow."

Blueberry sales surged by £14.7m to £26.2m in the 12 months to May 2005, boosting the UK market to £26.2m, according to market figures.
