Nintendo, the world's largest portable video game maker, has delayed the release of its anticipated new title, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
Nintendo was counting on the new Zelda game to boost its profits
It was expected to a be a big seller and a key profit driver, but will now miss the busy Christmas sales period.
The game will not be available before 1 April as extra levels are added.
Nintendo saw profits tumble in the last quarter as it faced weaker demand for its consoles and the release of Sony's portable PlayStation (PSP) loomed.
The high cost of launching new products also hurt profits and the delay to the release of the Zelda game means the firm's development costs will increase.
In an effort to boost profits, Nintendo said it would cut the price of its DS handheld device from $150 (£83) to $130, as it faces competition from Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP).
The GameBoy Micro will be launched in the US in September
Nintendo said the cut would be timed to precede a US dog game launch on 22 August.
Nintendogs, a game where players must care for a puppy, is reported to be doing well in Japan.
Nintendo's own GameBoy Advance sells for about $100 and its new Game Boy Micro, a smaller version of the console, will cost about $99.
The Micro would be available from the end of September in US. It will be launched in Europe on 4 November for a recommended retail price of 99 euros ($122),
Sony's PSP, which is due to be launched in Europe on 1 September, costs about $250.
