Clarks to cut more jobs
The footwear firm plans to shed almost a third of its workforce
Footwear firm Clarks is to axe another 250 jobs, bringing to 440 the number of cuts scheduled this year as it combats a downturn in its markets.
The latest job shedding comes after a decision to close down the Clarks factory in Bath later this year.
Over the last two months, the company has announced that 105 jobs are to go at the K Shoes factory in Kendal, Cumbria by April. It will also close its factory in Exmouth in Devon in April with the loss of 85 jobs.
A restructure of the businesses was necessary to "maintain competitiveness in a tough worldwide market", the company said.
A spokeswoman added: "Whilst the company is confident of further improvements to its overall performance this year, the continuing high level of the pound and the economic crisis in the Far East have had a major impact on the viability of the UK manufacturing operations."
The rationalisation program will leave Clarks with six factories in the UK employing 1,000 people.
Talks are being held with unions about the redundancies, the spokeswoman said.
