Going bananas

Breaking News

A trade war between Europe the US is looming over the humble banana.

The two sides seem hell bent on fighting a bruising battle over the import of bananas to the European Union (EU).

Now the war is escalating.

In response to the threat of US sanctions against European nations, Sir Leon Brittan, the EU's trade commissioner, has launched a stinging attack on Washington's actions.

The argument centres on the preferential treatment the EU gives to banana producers from former African, Caribbean and Pacific colonies of France and the UK.
