ITV Digital's licence sale postponed
Children watching television
Still watching terrestrial channels, for now
The UK's television watchdog has extended the deadline to apply for the broadcast licences being re-sold following ITV Digital's collapse.

The delay comes at the request of a number of firms considering whether to submit a bid, according to the Independent Television Commission.

The Commission says that applicants will now have more time to develop their technical proposals for the digital terrestrial licences.

The two-week extension means that bids must now be in by 13 June, with the outcome due to be announced on 4 July.

The pay television firm ITV Digital was axed after failing to find either the money to settle its bills or a buyer for the business.

Potential buyers

Several organisations have told the UK television industry watchdog that they are keen to take over the three digital terrestrial multiplex licences formerly owned by ITV Digital.

The expressions of interest in the licences are confidential.

But the BBC has submitted an interest in the licence, and it has been reported that a call-centre in Scotland called MGt is also interested.

Industry sources have said that Carlton and Granada are also considering a joint bid.

The companies now have another two weeks to prepare their formal applications for the licences.

They will then proceed to the tender stage, when the list of applicants is likely to be announced.
